How To Maintain a WordPress Website

If you’re one of the many website owners who chose WordPress as your preferred CMS then it is absolutely imperative you maintain various elements of the site to keep it secure and protected from the many cyber threats out there.

With this in mind, we’ve put together the following list of protocols you should undertake as regularly as possible.

Keep WordPress Up-to-Date

WordPress regularly release new updates of the platform and the majority of these include updated security features.

Wordpress UpdatesKeeping WordPress up-to-date couldn’t be easier. If there are updates available, you will usually get a notification when you first log-in but if not, there will be an orange highlighted number besides the ‘Updates’ tab on the top-left of the screen. Click on ‘Updates’ and you will see a list of all items that need updating, the top area will tell you if you need to update WordPress. Simply follow the on-screen instructions and you should be running an updated version within a minute or two.

Keep Your WordPress Plugins Up-to-Date

The majority of attacks on WordPress websites come through outdated plugins. It is vital that you keep these up-to-date!

Plugin UpdatesSimilar to updating WordPress itself, keeping your plugins up-to-date is pretty straight forward. Again, you should be notified of any available updates. This will be shown by an orange highlighted number besides the ‘Plugins’ tab within the WordPress menu. Click the ‘Plugins’ menu item and you will be shown all installed plugins on your website. All plugins with updates available will be highlighted. Simply check the boxes of any plugins you wish to update, choose ‘Update’ from the ‘Bulk Actions’ drop-down menu at the bottom or top of the list and then click ‘Apply’.

Keep Your WordPress Theme Up-to-Date

Although not as common as plugins, outdated themes are another easy entry point for hacks and attacks.

Unfortunately, updating themes is not as simple as the previous steps and because all themes and theme designers are different, there is no simple way of explaining how to update your theme and we suggest you contact your theme creator or web developer for further instructions. – If that’s us, please get in touch and we will be happy to run through it with you for your individual set-up.

Make Regular Backups of Your WordPress Website

Realistically, it’s not a matter of if you suffer a cyber attack, it’s a matter of when. With that in mind, you need to be as best prepared as possible and recovering from such attacks can be much less of a nightmare if you have regular backups of both your website files and your database.

This can start to get a little technical so we recommend investing in some reliable plugins that will take care of backups for you. The following is a list of 3rd party plugins that offer backing up services but are in no way related to Riweb and we take no responsibility for their use:

You should take maintaining your WordPress website extremely seriously – you wouldn’t leave your shop/office/warehouse open to burglars etc so why would you leave your online business unprotected?
